What kind of phone do I need to be able to use the app?

In order to download and use the ShopandScan app you need either an Android phone or an iPhone. If you have an Android phone then it needs to be running Android 4.4 or later, this includes the vast majority of phones made in the last few years.

How much data does the app use?

The Android app is 13 MB and the iPhone app is 44.2 MB, so while it will use up very little space on your phone, you may wish to wait until you are on a Wi-Fi connection before you download it. After installation the app uses only a very small amount of data when submitting purchases or update. In the app settings there is an option to use WiFi only. If you choose this option please remember to regularly connect to WiFi in order for you data to be submitted.

What do you mean by 'meal deal'?

By this we mean the promotions run by many shops where if you buy several different types of item together you get them at a reduced price. For example, most supermarkets offer a deal where you can buy a sandwich, drink and snack for a lower price than if you had bought them separately.

Remember: when entering the price of these items into the app, you should enter the price as it appears on your receipt.

What purchases should I submit with the app?

You should tell us about any food or drink you buy that you intend to consume outside of your home. This includes snacks such as sandwiches or fruit, drinks such as soft drinks or coffee and any meals. We also want to know about anything that you buy for somebody else. We also want to know about any takeaways you buy to be consumed at home.

What purchases shouldn't I submit with the app?

We don't want you to tell us about any alcoholic drinks that you buy, anything that is bought for you or anything that you get for free (this doesn't include items bought as part of a 'buy one get one free' promotions or similar, which we do still want you to tell us about).

What if I don't buy any snacks one week?

If you do not make any snack/meal purchases in a week please tell us using the 'Nothing Bought' survey in the app at the end of the week. Only records submitted from the 'Nothing Bought' survey on a Saturday or Sunday will be eligible for weekly reward points.

How much do I get for submitting my purchases?

Submitting your purchases earns you reward points, which can be exchanged for high street vouchers. For more details on this, please consult your invitation letter.

Can I still take part if I change phone?

Yes, you can install the app on a new phone and log in using the username you received when registering.

What is my username?

You will receive your username in your registration email after you sign up. If you have lost this email please contact the help desk. You only need to enter your username once after downloading the app, unless you change your phone. There is no need to enter a password.

Do I need to be online to submit my purchases?

No, you can enter your purchases while offline, then the app will store this information until the next time your phone is connected to the internet, at which time the app will submit your purchases automatically.

The app closes when I try to scan a barcode

In the latest iPhone operating system called iOS 12 you will be asked to give permission for the app to use the phone camera. The app uses the camera to scan barcodes so you must give permission to allow the app to work correctly.

If you do not give permission you may find the app closes when you try to scan a barcode. To fix this you can change the setting by following the steps below:
